Once Upon a Time...

Our Adventure Driving through a Fairytale ✨

Days: 7
Hours spent driving: 32

Once upon a time, in a boring little town, there was a strong African man and his cute little wife. ;)

One was from somewhere hot and one was from somewhere cold,
so they decided to find a place where real fairytales are told.

But if you think it was all just magic and fun,
just look at the driving times and RUN!

Because you see, travelings not all that easy.

But if you grin and bare it
you'll find in the end, it will earn quite a merit!

Ok, ok I'll stop now. That was even painful for me to write! haha But in all honestly it sums up this trip pretty well: a beautiful fairytale land, but with lots and lots of driving!

We stayed in Frankfurt and decided to rent a car and take day trips everyday TO and FROM all these beautiful locations! Yes, we could have found hotels in all these little towns but with the package deal we got through Delta it was cheaper to just stay in one place and drive. Plus I really like having a home base so I don't have to pack up and move every-night. In the end, I'm really happy we did it this way. Although, it was quite a strain on my chauffeur (husband) ;) but he also preferred it this was as well.

Someone asked if I recommend driving in Europe and I absolutely do if your coming to Germany. (We drove Italy last year and that's a whole other story!) Germany's roads are well thought out and most of these day trips were like driving on the freeway in the US, except for one little exception: NO SPEED LIMIT! Yep, move all the way to the right and plan on people passing you going like 200 mph! Or don't, and drive like a race car driver yourself! Just make sure you learn what all the road signs mean before you head off, something we definitely should have researched more of.

"Wow, all roads lead to Ausfahrt here don't they?!"

"Babe, that means exit!"

Day 1:

Burg Eltz

I mean, having lunch inside a real castle courtyard is pretty normal right?!

Ah Burg Eltz! The most instagramable castle in all the land! But truly, this place was absolutely breathtaking! Hidden in misty mountains with nothing else around, it's a true adventure getting there and finding this hidden gem! We were practically the only ones there for a while and were able to book a tour on spot of the inside of this amazing castle! 10/10 recommend!

Cochem

From Burg Eltz, we headed on over to the charming town Cochem. There's a beautiful castle on a mountain that overlooks the whole city right on the river!

Day 2:

Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber

My favorite street on planet earth!!

Probably the cutest most colorful town on this planet! A true color lover's dream (that's me)! Everything about Rothenburg was just charming, charming, cute! Watching children run home from school with there backpacks on brings the realization that people really live here! What a dream!

Heidelberg

Another favorite of mine. The ruins of a huge castle overlook this now university town. We walked up and down the thousands of stairs to get into this beautiful city and just enjoyed walking around the shops and restaurants while listening to the love music. I tried to convince my husband to dance in the middle of the town square with me because that's what The Bachelor would do, but he wasn't having it! Mark my words though, this little town will be seen on one of the future season's- it's down right reality-tv-perfect!

Day 3:

Mainz

We went to Mainz mainly because we wanted break from all the driving for a day. Only 30 minutes away from Frankfurt, it was a nice day trip to the Saturday market. To be honest though, probably my least favorite day seeing as the most eventful moment was driving up a one way cobblestone street and having to reverse all the way back through!

Day 4:

Neuschwanstein Castle

It looked like a painting!
The view from inside the castle! Overlooking the village and another castle on a hill!

Here it is folks! The castle everyone said we couldn't miss, so we braved the 4.5 hour drive there AND back! Only to find upon arrival that all the tickets for the day were sold out!!! But if there's anything I've learned through my travel experience it's that you still ASK, even if a sign is telling you otherwise. So we stood in line anyway, and guesss what! We got the very last tickets for the day! Lucky, lucky us.
We hiked to the top of the mountain and then waited in a huge line for our turn to tour the castle. This was honestly my least favorite part because it was freezing and the first time we'd really been in a crowd the whole time Germany. It felt much more touristy than anything else we had seen so far, but I mean, it was a real life "Disney" castle, so of course it was going to be touristy!
The inside was beautiful and the best part was the view from inside the castle- looked just like a painting!

Day 5:

Wurzburg

Würzburg was a city we almost missed but I'm so glad we didn't!! It was our last full day so we weren't sure If we wanted a 1.5 hour drive again but YOLO! (do people still use that?)
It was one of those perfect rainy days that only made every thing even more beautiful! Once again, we were one of the only tourists around and had the palace gardens all to ourselves!
After visiting the palace we wandered into the citer and shopped in little stores by the chapels and crossed the bridge to see the most incredible view!
A perfect way to end our fairytale journey!
